How I met Moriah

Moriah and I met under unusual circumstances.  I was hired as the Assistant Clinical Director at Monte Nido in March 2020, where Moriah was Clinical Director.  What neither of us predicted was a global pandemic hitting the week before I started my job.  Due to our positions as managers of the site, we were thrust into one trust-building exercise after another.  I want to share one of those experiences.

When I knew Moriah was pretty great

There was a moment, shortly after I started my job when I was confronted with past trauma of being part of an unhealthy workplace system.  Namely, I was given the message over and over again that my voice was not valued or respected.  At one point, I was asked to no longer speak in meetings.  Due to these past experiences, it was risky to speak up and let Moriah (my new boss) know my opinion.  Additionally, it felt vulnerable to share about my past.

Ultimately, because I value authenticity and bringing my best to the table,  I decided to share my opinion and my past experiences.  Moriah listened, she asked relevant questions, she shared her own workplace experiences and then we worked together on how to move forward.  She made it clear that my opinion mattered and was valued.  I have seen those qualities in Moriah time and time again, working with employees, fellow managers, and as a therapist with clients.  These qualities are some of the reasons I felt comfortable starting a business with her!

5 Things I admire about Moriah as a therapist

First, Moriah works from a place of curiosity.  She quickly challenges her assumptions and holds space to better understand her clients.  Then, she uses that understanding to help them.

Second, Moriah is dependable.  Importantly, when Moriah says she is going to do something – she’ll reliably do it.  As a therapist, this helps clients to feel safe.

Third, Moriah values her therapeutic relationships and operates from a person-centered perspective.  Moriah builds strong therapeutic alliances.  Additionally,  she works hard to connect with her clients and to relate to them.  For example, Moriah will talk to you about how great cats are, find a mutual interest to discuss or invite humor for a good laugh.

Fourth, Moriah is extremely well-versed. From school to her internships, and continued training Moriah strives to stay on top of her areas of expertise and is always excited to share that expertise with her colleagues, those outside the profession, and her clients.

Last, one of the things Moriah values above all else is doing a good job. I have watched her comb over notes, decisions, and details to ensure she was providing her best work and she brings that to her work as a therapist.

In conclusion, if you don’t know Moriah, you should.  She’s pretty great!
