6 Favorite Things About EMDR Therapy
Before getting into my favorite things about EMDR therapy, if you are interested in learning more about what EMDR therapy is, or doing EMDR therapy online check out our blog: can I do EMDR online?
Now, on to my favorite things!
One, EMDR helps individuals challenge maladaptive patterns in their lives.
For example, a challenging thought pattern might be, “I’m not good enough.” This thought can lead to isolation, as a protective strategy against rejection, or self-doubt. EMDR helps to untangle those messages.
Two, EMDR helps individuals develop new, more helpful patterns.
After challenging the patterns, you work with your therapist to identify and adapt more helpful patterns in your life.
Three, EMDR helps individuals add grounding tools and other resources to lean on.
For example, Safe Place is an incredible grounding tool when feeling triggered. Many clients report loving the opportunity to use safe place after a processing session.
Four, EMDR frees individuals to engage differently with the present and future where they previously felt stuck.
For example, a parent had a traumatic experience with their kid that continues to get triggered even when their kid is no longer in crisis. EMDR helps the brain work through the trauma in the past.
Five, EMDR offers a different therapeutic approach than traditional talk therapy.
Interestingly, the vast majority of my EMDR clients have tried traditional talk therapy first. Most clients have found talk therapy to be very helpful, but they have identified areas they would still like to work on. Additionally, many of my clients continue to work with their talk therapist while doing EMDR as part of their therapeutic team!
Six, I know EMDR can help because I’ve watched it help many clients. And, it’s helped me too!
Not only have I seen it help so many of my clients, but it’s also my first choice of therapeutic model for my own work.
If any of the above reasons sound like they might be helpful to you – don’t be afraid to reach out and ask more questions.
